AI’s Transformation of Work — May 31, 2026 Update
Welcome to the Treeline! The view opens up here.
These weekly updates are a semi-automated curation service. This update adds new entries to my ongoing log of AI’s transformation of work, the good and the bad.
Real-world deployment of autonomous software agents has accelerated across both customer operations and high-level research. PenFed Credit Union projected $1.6 million in annual savings from its deployment of Salesforce’s Agentforce platform, which reduced call handle times by 10% and cut after-call administrative work by 50%. This deployment aligns with broader commercial traction, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff reporting that Agentforce annual recurring revenue crossed $1 billion as token processing surged to 28.6 trillion. Mid-market enterprises are increasingly bypassing traditional IT modernization stages to deploy agentic systems directly, over 40% of surveyed mid-sized firms adopting agents for immediate workflow automation. These operational scaling successes are mirrored in high-level knowledge work: Google DeepMind introduced Co-Scientist, a multi-agent Gemini-based system that successfully generated and validated novel biomedical hypotheses through automated in vitro lab trials, demonstrating AI’s emerging role as a partner in scientific research.
This rapid expansion of automated capabilities continues to drive significant workforce adjustments and operational friction. Global financial software developer Intuit announced layoffs of 17% of its workforce, approximately 3,000 employees, to streamline its organization and fund intensive AI product development. This was joined by Wix planning to lay off between 800 and 1,000 workers following a full return-to-office mandate, and insurance broker Acrisure initiating a phased reduction of 2,250 positions specifically tied to its AI automation transition. At the same time, the broader cognitive and societal impacts of these tools are emerging in administrative systems. Generative AI tools have driven a massive surge in pro se litigation dockets as self-represented individuals use models to draft highly polished legal briefs. However, a study of 370,000 college essays warns that this linguistic polish comes with cognitive homogenization, human-only writing containing up to eight times more novel conceptual combinations than AI-assisted work.
Capital flows are realigning around these high-cost infrastructure and development layers. Anthropic raised $65 billion in Series H funding in May 2026 at a post-money valuation of $965 billion, reporting a $47 billion run-rate revenue driven by rapid enterprise adoption. This capital concentration is reshaping corporate spending priorities across the wider economy. A Gartner survey of Chief Financial Officers revealed that corporate budgets are heavily prioritizing AI and technology growth, while headcount expansion and employee compensation rates are projected to slow down significantly. This shift highlights a broader corporate reallocation where capital is increasingly directed toward cloud resources and automated infrastructure at the expense of traditional payroll growth.

PenFed Credit Union projected $1.6 million in annual savings from its deployment of Salesforce’s Agentforce “Agent Wingman.” The autonomous tool reduced call handle times by 10%, after-call administrative work by 50%, and held calls by 40%.
May 28, 2026 · Salesforce
Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff announced that Agentforce annual recurring revenue crossed $1 billion. He reported that token processing surged 152% quarter-over-quarter to 28.6 trillion, with AI agents now handling double the customer support volume of human reps.
May 27, 2026 · The New York Times
A study analyzing 370,000 college essays found that after ChatGPT’s introduction, writing became linguistically polished but intellectually homogenized. Human-only essays contained up to eight times more novel concepts, raising concerns that generative AI assistance acts as a cognitive crutch that stifles original thinking.
May 27, 2026 · Anthropic
Anthropic raised $65 billion in Series H funding at a $965 billion post-money valuation. The startup disclosed a $47 billion run-rate revenue, demonstrating unprecedented corporate adoption and capital deployment for enterprise-grade AI models like Claude.
May 25, 2026 · Wix
Website builder Wix announced plans to lay off 800 to 1,000 employees, representing its largest restructuring in history. The downsizing follows a full return-to-office mandate and is driven by intense technological shifts, particularly AI-driven automated web design.
May 25, 2026 · The New York Times
Generative AI tools are driving a surge in pro se litigation. Litigants are using ChatGPT and Claude to draft highly polished legal briefs and filings, allowing self-represented individuals to flood court dockets and significantly increase judicial administrative workloads.
May 20, 2026 · Acrisure
Global insurance broker Acrisure initiated a phased layoff of 2,250 employees (~10% of staff) extending into 2027. Co-founder and CEO Greg Williams explicitly tied the headcount cuts to the company’s aggressive push into AI and operations automation.
May 20, 2026 · Intuit
Intuit is laying off 17% of its workforce, approximately 3,000 employees worldwide, in a massive restructuring aimed at reducing operational complexity and sharpening its focus on AI-driven products. The move joins a widening trend of major technology firms reducing headcount to fund and prioritize AI initiatives.
May 18, 2026 · Google DeepMind
Google DeepMind researchers introduced Co-Scientist, a multi-agent AI system built on Gemini that generates, critiques, and refines novel scientific hypotheses. Validated through in vitro lab experiments, the system successfully identified new drug repurposing candidates and synergistic combination therapies for acute myeloid leukemia, demonstrating AI’s capacity for autonomous scientific research.
Apr 14, 2026 · BBVA
Spanish banking giant BBVA successfully adopted enterprise AI by empowering employee initiative rather than imposing top-down mandates. By deploying a secure AI environment and building decentralized peer-driven expert networks, BBVA scaled to over 11,000 active users who built 4,800 custom internal tools, reporting time savings of two to five hours per employee weekly.
Apr 4, 2026 · Latent Labs
